Important Update: Temporary Suspension of Sales to the United States

At The Gem Nerd, we pride ourselves on providing our clients with exceptional service, transparency, and the highest quality ethically sourced diamonds and gemstones. However, due to the current climate of shifting trade policies and the imposition of new tariffs, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend all sales to the United States until these tariffs are removed.

We understand that this is disappointing news for our American clientele. We would like to provide clarity on why this decision was necessary by breaking down how these tariffs are currently impacting our two main product categories.

Products of Canadian or United States Origin

For our products manufactured and sourced within Canada or the United States—including many of our custom engagement rings and settings—these items should technically be exempt from tariffs under the current CUSMA/USMCA agreement.

Unfortunately, despite these protections, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is currently charging the new tariffs to our customers in the U.S. upon entry. The Gem Nerd is actively disputing these charges on behalf of our American customers to ensure the trade agreement is honored correctly. However, the official dispute process is lengthy and may take up to nine months to resolve. To protect our clients from these unexpected and arguably incorrect charges, we cannot in good conscience continue shipping these items until the situation is rectified.

Products Manufactured Outside of Canada or the United States

For products sourced or manufactured outside of North America (such as certain specific gemstones or international designer components), tariffs are legally charged to the importer of record—which, in international shipping, is the customer.

Regrettably, we have encountered several instances of non-payment of these tariffs by customers upon delivery. This creates significant logistical challenges and financial strain on our operations. Consequently, we will no longer be offering these products for sale to the U.S. until the current tariff mandates are cancelled.

Looking Forward

This was not an easy decision to make, as we value the relationships we have built with our neighbors to the south. We want to thank our American customers for their understanding, patience, and continued support during this complicated time.

We are monitoring the situation daily and remain hopeful that we will be able to resume business with our American customers in the near future. In the meantime, we will continue to serve our Canadian and international clients with the same dedication to excellence you have come to expect from The Gem Nerd.
